Colorado FAQs

Colorado is located in the central-western United States, bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma and New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and Arizona to the southwest. It is known for its mountainous terrain and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The best time to visit Colorado is during summer (June to August) for warm weather and outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking. Winter (December to February) is ideal for skiing and snowboarding. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for sightseeing.

To travel from Australia to Colorado, fly into Denver International Airport (DEN), the state’s largest airport. Direct flights are not available, so expect to connect through major U.S. hubs such as Los Angeles, San Francisco or Dallas. The total journey typically takes around 20-24 hours.

Renting a car is the best way to explore Colorado due to its diverse landscapes and wide distances between attractions. In Denver and other cities, public transport options like buses and light rail are available. For mountain and rural areas, a car provides the most flexibility. Additionally, Colorado offers scenic train journeys, such as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, which provide a unique and picturesque way to experience the state’s stunning landscapes.

Must-dos in Colorado include visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, exploring the vibrant city of Denver, and enjoying the ski resorts in Aspen and Vail. Don’t miss the historic town of Telluride, the scenic beauty of Garden of the Gods, and the cultural attractions in Colorado Springs.

Colorado spans approximately 104,094 square miles (269,837 square kilometres), making it the 8th largest state in the USA. This size encompasses diverse landscapes from mountains and plateaus to deserts, providing a range of outdoor activities and natural wonders.

The main airport in Colorado is Denver International Airport (DEN), which serves as the primary gateway for both domestic and international flights. Other significant airports include Colorado Springs Airport (COS) and Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASP), catering to specific regions and travel needs.

A recommended stay in Colorado is around 7 to 14 days. This duration allows you to experience Denver’s attractions, explore the Rocky Mountains, and enjoy outdoor activities in areas like Aspen and Colorado Springs. Additional days are ideal for deeper exploration of the state’s diverse landscapes.

Tipping in Colorado follows standard U.S. practices: 15-20% in restaurants, $1-$2 per bag for hotel porters, and $1-$5 per night for housekeeping. Taxi drivers should receive around 10-15% of the fare. Tips are also appreciated for other services, such as valet parking and bellhops.
