Discover the Regions and Highlights of Portland

Portland Neighbourhoods
In classic quirky Portland style, the city is jokingly divided into six “quadrants”. Northeast Portland is the go-to for shows, sports and big events, and Southeast Portland is packed with artsy, quirky and foodie neighbourhoods. Across the river, South Portland is the newest quadrant, with diverse eats and river activities. Southwest Portland is home to lively downtown as well as Washington Park’s numerous attractions; cross a footbridge into Forest Park, which is in Northwest Portland for more extensive hiking, or check out upscale shopping and dining in this quadrant. North Portland is the so-called “fifth” quadrant, where you’ll find the airport, convention centre and more beautiful gardens.

Near The City
From zip lines to whitewater rafting and horseback riding to pioneer history, these attractions are worth the short trips outside Portland. Choose from multiple cities to explore, each with its own unique landscapes and history. Grab a tent and experience some of the best camping in the country; check out the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City; or settle into a pint of Oregon-made craft beer at a nearby brewery.

Columbia River George
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area measures 128 km long and 1,219 m deep — and is home to several picturesque stretches and communities worth visiting, stretching from the edge of Portland in the west to the community of The Dalles at its easternmost point. Along the way, the gorge transitions from a mossy, forested procession of waterfalls into an arid landscape where summertime temperatures topping 38 degrees Celsius. Don’t miss the iconic Multnomah Falls and the historic Cascade Locks, and if outdoor adventure is what drives you, be sure to visit Hood River.

Wine Country
Just south of Portland lies the Willamette Wine Valley, a rich wine country known for premium pinot noir, rolling hills and stellar bucolic views. Go car-free and indulge in one of many guided wine tours throughout the valley. According to the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, the valley is “one of the premier pinot noir producing areas in the world” because the Coast range to the west and the Cascade range to the east ensure the grapes neither freeze in the coastal winds nor burn in the high-desert sun.

Mount Hood
Just an hour east of Portland, Mount Hood isn’t just Oregon’s tallest peak; it’s an iconic destination that’s beloved for four seasons of outdoor adventure. For generations, members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation held religious ceremonies, foraged for huckleberries, traveled and hunted for deer and elk on its forested slopes. More recently, emigrants on the Oregon Trail traversed Mount Hood’s ridgelines and forests via the Barlow Road, built in 1846 to provide safe passage to Oregon City. In the early 1900s, portions of the toll road were incorporated into the construction of Highway 26.

Oregon Coast
Lined by Highway 101 to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Oregon Coast is 363 miles (584 km) of rugged shoreline, where tide pools and hiking trails share sunsets with beach towns and lighthouses. Oregon state law stipulates that from the surf to the brush, “the public has free and uninterrupted use of the beaches.” Visitors can enjoy tide pooling, hiking, whale watching, and exploring historic sites like lighthouses and Fort Clatsop. The coast is ideal for road trips along Highway 101, with highlights including the Tillamook Cheese Factory and dramatic viewpoints on the Three Capes Scenic Route. While swimming is possible, cold waters and strong currents make it risky.
